Downtown made candles offer zero waste solution

Hygge – noun (hoo-gah) - a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture). Definition from Oxford Languages.

For a local couple, the word “hygge” inspired more than just the idea of being cozy and content, it inspired a whole line of sustainable, zero-waste candles. Chris and Cyndi Hileman created Hyggelight: The Growing Candle. The idea is simple, purchase one of nine styles of candles, burn the candle and use the container to plant the label that came with your candle. Each label is made of paper and contains wildflower seeds, making this candle plastic-free and zero-waste. In addition to picking the style of container you’d like, each candle can be scented in 11 different varieties.  

Hyggelight operates out of The Gateway at Lowertown, a commercial development that will offer a vibrant mix of office, retail and food with spaces perfect for working, gathering and entertaining.​ Located at 902 N Superior St, you can order your candles online and pick up in person.

These candles have been featured on NPR, Good Morning America, Forbes and HGTV. This year for Small Business Saturday, the entire website will be 20% off and all orders placed on Saturday will receive a FREE mystery candle.
