Fennie the Lab Promotes Downtown Toledo

You might recognize this handsome boy from Instagram as @fennie_the_lab where he has an impressive following just shy of 8,000. Fenway, or Fennie as he is affectionately nick named, is a local 15-year-old chocolate lab “chariot driver and adventurer” who has been sharing his explorations of Downtown Toledo and the surrounding area on social media since March of 2014.

In his earlier years, Fennie hiked Hocking Hills, northern Michigan and the Finger Lakes of New York. As the course of life prevailed and Fennie grew older, he was faced with some mobility challenges. Quick to ensure that Fennie was able to continue fulfilling his desire for adventure, his paw-rents got him a camping wagon that they refer to as his “chariot”. The use of the chariot means that clear, paved walkways are a necessity and make Downtown Toledo and our Metroparks ideal destinations.

Fennie has made it to nearly all of the 17 parks that make up our Metroparks system, but one of his favorites is Downtown’s Middlegrounds. Here Fennie can be seen strolling along the riverside, resting in the shade of the Rotary Roundhouse or visiting with other pups in the designated off-leash area. Fennie also enjoys visiting the recently updated Promenade Park and walking along The Docks on the Eastside of the river.

The parks aren’t the only places Fennie frequents in Downtown Toledo. He loves to make his rounds at some of the great patio spaces Downtown has to offer, such as Maddie and Bella’s, Pita Pit, and especially Manhattan’s Pub & Cheer, which was the first Downtown restaurant Fennie ever visited. Fennie also enjoys attending Downtown Toledo dog-friendly events such as the Mudhens’ “Bark in the Park” and Hensville.

Fennie has made a lot of great friends - both human and canine - through his travels. Some are local, others are from out of state and even other countries like Japan and Spain but have connections to Toledo or Ohio. Fennie and his paw-rents encourage others to get out and explore all that Toledo has to offer. Whether it’s the riverfront, our fine dining, or all of the beautiful urban art and sculptures – Toledo is easily accessible. There is so much to see and do!
